Water Bottles That Won’t Turn Your Kid’s Bag into a Paddling Pool

Three colourful Chilly’s kids’ water bottles for school

A school water bottle has one very important job: keep the water inside the bottle.

This sounds obvious until one of your kids comes home with their water bottle upside down in their bag. We’ve all been there and experienced the all too familiar shock and horror of what’s to come when you spot the offender!

So, for our next back-to-school edit, we’ve picked five bottles that balance leak resistance, durability, easy cleaning and designs children might actually remember to bring home.

1. Chilly’s Original Kids Bottle

If they’re going to carry it every day, it may as well be something they actually like looking at. The Chilly’s Original Kids Bottle combines the brand’s clean design with a covered straw lid, leakproof construction and vacuum insulation to keep water cold throughout the school day.

The stainless-steel body is made with 90% recycled stainless steel, while the hard-wearing powder coating should cope with the usual knocks, drops and occasional trip across the playground. It also comes in plenty of colours and patterns, with personalisation available if you’d rather not spend half the school year peering into the lost-property box.

2. Owala FreeSip Kids

The Owala FreeSip Kids is probably the most versatile bottle on the list. Its clever lid lets children either sip through the built-in straw or tilt the bottle back and drink normally. It sounds like a small detail, but children can have surprisingly strong opinions about this.

It’s insulated, sturdy and comes in enough colour combinations to give it a reasonable chance of being recognised after lunch. The lid also closes over the drinking spout, keeping it protected from whatever else is currently living at the bottom of the school bag.

3. Hydro Flask Kids Wide Mouth

The Hydro Flask Kids Wide Mouth is for children who approach bottle ownership as a long-term durability test. Its stainless-steel body is tough, the silicone boot provides some extra protection and the insulation keeps water cold throughout the school day.

The handle is easy for smaller hands to carry, and unlike some children’s bottles, it doesn’t immediately look too babyish as they get older. That gives it a better chance of being used for several years, rather than being declared embarrassing without warning.

4. Klean Kanteen Kid Classic

If you’d prefer something simpler, the Klean Kanteen Kid Classic is difficult to argue with. It has a lightweight stainless-steel body, a straightforward design and fewer mysterious little parts to lose, scrub or eventually discover beneath the dishwasher.

That simplicity is its main appeal. It’s durable, reusable and available with different cap options, depending on whether your child prefers a sport top or a more conventional opening. Nothing particularly flashy, just a very good bottle that gets on with the job.

5. Thermos Funtainer

The Thermos Funtainer is especially good for younger children. The straw pops up at the press of a button and disappears beneath the lid when closed, helping prevent leaks while keeping the drinking end away from grubby hands, playground floors and other places best left unexplored.

It’s compact enough to fit comfortably inside smaller school bags and lunch bags, while its insulated stainless-steel construction keeps drinks cold for hours. Easy to open, easy to carry and, crucially, less likely to return everything else in the bag slightly damp.
